The GTK is used to encrypt broadcast and multicast transmissions. It is derived from a function involving the PMK, ANonce, SNonce, the authenticator’s MAC address, and the supplicant’s MAC address. The PTK is used to encrypt unicast transmissions. MICs are generated to validate the integrity of the transmission. The authenticator and supplicant each generate a nonce known as the ANonce and SNonce respectively.
Authenticator and Supplicant Nonces (ANonce and SNonce)Ī nonce, as it pertains to cryptography, is a random/arbitrary number that is used on a one-time basis, typically as an input to some cryptographic algorithm. The RSNIE carries information about a station’s authentication and encryption capabilities, including cipher suite information. The GMK is generated by the authenticator. A new 802.1X authentication would generate a new MSK and thus a new PMK.įor PSK authentication, the PMK is the PSK and so therefore does not change unless the passphrase/PSK changes. The PMK is derived from the Master Session Key (MSK) which is a product of the 802.1X authentication. I wasn't noticing it because before I was working only with Android and it didn't check if a certificate was expired, unlike iOS.īecause I wasn't been able to find any troubleshooting checklist for similar situations I will mention it here.
Then it is needed to install it and grant trust to it. In order to fix it, it is necessary to go to Help -> SSL Proxying -> Reset Charles Root Certificate. In my case, it was an expired certificate. Then in Settings -> General -> About -> Certificate Trust Settings set the switch for the certificate to on. In iPhone's settings install a new profile with a certificate. On iPhone, in wifi settings enable manual proxy and enter the computer's IP and port 8888.

SSL handshake with client failed - Remote host terminated theĮrror in Charles Proxy from iOS 16.1, which should indicate that certificate isn't trusted, but I granted full trust in the iPhone settings.
